It’s that time of year when people start thinking of their New Year’s resolutions. I have never been a fan of resolutions, probably because I usually fail at keeping them, but goals on the other hand are a different ball game.

At first glance, some may think that goals and resolutions are basically the same thing. A resolution, according to the dictionary, is a firm decision to do or not do something. Whereas a goal is the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.

When I have made resolutions in the past and failed I think to myself “why keep trying, I already messed up.” Whereas a goal is something I work towards, something I plan for. Though I may fail one day or multiple days that doesn’t mean I have failed altogether. I can get back on the bandwagon and continue towards my goal. I believe the reason so many resolutions fail is because we set too high of an expectation for ourselves and when we don’t meet it we give up because of our disappointment.

When thinking of a goal I would like to accomplish, I need to also think about how I can reach that goal. Is it realistic for me to be able to reach the goal? What does my life look like on a monthly/weekly/daily level while I’m working towards my goal? Is that attainable? Setbacks are bound to happen, we are human. That doesn’t mean you failed at reaching your goal. It just means you need to look at what went wrong and why and determine how to improve. Maybe you realize you need an accountability partner or maybe you need to adjust your every day schedule to reach the goal. As long as you are working towards the goal you have set you are succeeding even with the setbacks.
