This fall, I hosted a set of morning mini sessions in Longmont, CO, at Jim Hamm Nature Area. The light was soft, the air was cool, and the park was calm—just a handful of families with that perfect golden glow breaking through the trees. There’s something special about photographing families before the day really begins. Kids are rested, parents are relaxed, and everyone still has that morning energy that makes smiles come easy.
Why Morning Mini Sessions Make All the Difference
Morning sessions have become one of my favorite tips to share with newer family photographers. Everyone loves the look of golden hour, but the truth is, sunrise light can be just as dreamy—and sometimes even better. There’s less wind, fewer crowds, and softer tones that make skin look beautiful straight out of camera. For families with younger kids, it’s also a win because little ones are usually at their happiest right after breakfast, not in the evening when bedtime moods start to kick in.
Turning Early Mornings into Easy Wins
If you’re an up-and-coming photographer, don’t sleep on morning sessions (literally). They’re an underrated way to serve families well while keeping your day flexible. You can shoot, edit, and still have the rest of your afternoon free for other projects—or a nap. The key is helping clients see the benefits ahead of time, so they show up excited rather than sleepy. Once they experience how smooth and joyful a morning shoot can be, they’ll likely request it again next time.
