There’s nothing quite like capturing a growing family during a maternity session, especially when you’ve had the privilege of documenting their journey before. When the Ridoutt family invited me to photograph their maternity session in beautiful Boulder, I knew I wanted to create something special that showcased their authentic connection. You can view their sweet newborn session HERE. Creating authentic family connections is at the heart of what we do as photographers, and it’s these genuine moments that families treasure forever.

Creating Authentic Family Connections through Movement

As photographers, we’ve all been there – families arrive looking slightly nervous, standing stiffly with awkward smiles that scream “just take the picture already!” But here’s the game-changer: movement prompts. Instead of positioning the Ridoutts in traditional static poses, I encouraged playful interactions. We incorporated playful eskimo kisses between mom and toddler, gentle tickling that created the most beautiful natural smiles, and sweet bear hugs from behind that showcased both the bump and family connection. These simple prompts transformed what could have been stiff portraits into a gallery filled with authentic moments. The magic happens when families forget about the camera and simply enjoy being together!

Beyond Posing: Building Your Movement Prompt Toolkit

Want to level-up your own maternity sessions? Start building ideas of movement-based prompts for your clients. For families with toddlers like the Ridoutts, be sure to incorporate. Group hugs always create beautiful moments with authentic reactions. Remember that your energy sets the tone – be enthusiastic, demonstrate what you’re asking for, and celebrate the silly moments! These techniques work across all session types, not just maternity. The best part? Clients who experience this approach not only love their photos more but tend to book again. Just like the Ridoutts, your movement-loving clients will return for milestone after milestone.
