Light and airy in-home lifestyle newborn session with family photographer Catherine Chamberlain Photography based in northern Colorado

I had the joy of photographing a newborn session in Colorado, right in the family’s home in Westminster. It’s one of my favorite settings for newborns because being in a familiar space helps everyone feel at ease, and it allows siblings to join in naturally. When parents ask about including brothers or sisters in newborn photos, my answer is always yes—it makes the experience that much more meaningful for the whole family.

The Secret to Genuine Sibling Smiles During a Newborn Session in Colorado

One thing I’ve learned over time is to always connect with the sibling before starting. Whether it’s listening to a quick story, admiring a favorite toy, or simply playing with them, taking those few minutes of intentional time helps them feel seen. That connection often translates to more natural smiles and interactions when it’s time to be in front of the camera. I also remind parents that safety is my number one priority. Every pose and prompt is done with the baby’s comfort first. I work slowly, keep sessions gentle, and use safe techniques when siblings are involved so everyone feels confident and relaxed.

The art of keeping sessions stress-free for parents and siblings

Flexibility is another key piece of working with families. Siblings can sometimes get restless, and that’s completely normal. I pivot easily—whether that means taking a short break, shifting focus back to the baby, or re-inviting siblings later when they’re ready. That approach keeps the energy positive and the experience stress-free. That’s why I always encourage other photographers—especially if you’re newer to newborn work—to keep it simple. Connect with siblings first, put safety above the shot, and stay flexible when things don’t go as planned. Sessions with parents and siblings can feel unpredictable, but that’s what makes them so rewarding. The more you lean into flexibility and genuine connection, the smoother your sessions will run—and the more authentic the images will feel for your families.
