I recently had the sweetest in-home newborn session with the Lamendola family in the Denver area. Their home was beautiful, the love between the parents and their kiddos was obvious, and we captured a mix of lifestyle and gently posed moments. It reminded me again why I love these sessions—and how much planning and energy go into making them run smoothly. As photographers, we know the magic doesn’t just happen when we click the shutter. That’s why the importance of pricing our work correctly is so important.
The Importance of Pricing Your Photography Services Properly
As photographers, setting your rates can be one of the most challenging tasks. It’s vital to know your worth. It’s not just about charging for the hour you’re shooting. You need to factor in gear, editing time, software, insurance, and yes—your take-home pay. Before you can confidently price, you have to understand what you actually need to earn. Then, price the full experience. You’re not just offering a photo session—you’re offering direction, styling tips, connection, editing, and final delivery. You’re giving them peace of mind and lifelong memories. That has serious value.
Actionable Steps You Can Take
You might be wondering where to start? First, list out all your business expenses—your Cost of Doing Business (CODB). Then divide that total by the number of hours you actually work on a the session you booked (including shooting, editing, emailing, admin, getting ready, drive time, etc.). That’s your true hourly rate. Once you know that number, you can reverse-engineer your pricing to make sure you’re not just busy—but profitable.
Present Your Worth with Confidence
When you present pricing, do it with confidence. Don’t feel like you have to justify every line item. Instead, offer a few package options that show your value at every level—and make sure even your smallest package is profitable. Clients feel your energy, so when you believe in your worth, they do too. Need help building packages that support your life and your goals? That’s something I love helping other photographers with—reach out any time!
