Tips for Family Photography in Less-Than-Ideal Conditions | Family Photos with the Grgic Family

Photographing the Grgic family in Boulder, CO, was a whirlwind—literally. The wind howled continuously throughout our session, with no break lasting more than five seconds. As a family photographer, I’ve learned to embrace the elements, and this session was no different. The challenge of the gusty conditions pushed me to think creatively and use a variety of techniques to capture beautiful moments—none of which looked like they were taken in a wind tunnel. If you’re looking for practical tips for family photography when the weather doesn’t cooperate, this session offered plenty of opportunities to adapt and still deliver a stunning gallery.

Tips for Family Photography: Posing and Location Tricks to Tame the Wind

One of the key strategies I used was leveraging the family members themselves as wind blockers—positioning them close together so they naturally shielded each other. This helped reduce flyaway hair and added a cozy, connected feeling to the images. We also incorporated playful, movement-friendly poses that distracted from the blustery conditions and brought out genuine smiles. When possible, I found natural windbreaks—like trees and small hills—to create calmer pockets for portraits. Quick, clear communication was essential. I gave direction during the windy moments so we were ready for the lulls in the wind, maximizing those fleeting still moments to lock in the best shots.

Staying Focused: Technical Tips for Family Photography in Challenging Weather

Unpredictable weather demands extra attention to technical details. I made a point to frequently check focus and exposure, adjusting as needed to adapt to changes. High-pressure environments like this can easily throw off your rhythm, so staying calm and grounded is crucial. My goal was to ensure that the Grgic family received a gallery full of variety and beauty—despite the chaos swirling around us. In the end, we created a collection of images that reflected not just their family dynamic, but also the resilience and creativity it takes to make magic in less-than-ideal conditions.
