With Mother’s Day 2024 just around the corner, I wanted to highlight the part of my style guide specifically for her. Whether you are a lady taking photos by yourself or with your family, these principles will still apply. The cake smash session featured in this blog beautifully embodies the essence of my style guide’s principles, showcasing timeless elegance and seamless coordination of outfits, ensuring every family member looks their best. My personal take is that because moms are often the ones taking photos of their family, they aren’t in many of the photos themselves. As a mom, I hope you will prioritize that and whether you start taking photos that include you or book a session with your family, the information below will help you determine what to wear to look fabulous in your photos.

Choosing Colors

For a camera-friendly look, opt for sophisticated colors like light neutrals, earth tones, soft pastels, or jewel tones. Avoid bright, bold, or neon colors as they can distract from the focus of the photo – the connection between you and your loved ones. Stick to light neutral earth tones such as cream, taupe, camel, or light gray, along with shades of soft pinks and muted blues. This softer, more neutral color palette blends beautifully with natural outdoor settings, ensuring the focus remains on you and your family.

Choosing Dresses and Accessories

Select long, flowy dresses or skirts to flatter all body types and add movement to your photos. Maxi skirts and dresses enhance the romantic feel, especially against natural backdrops like mountains or beaches. Shorter cocktail-length dresses or midi skirts also photograph beautifully. Avoid pants and shorts, and instead, opt for dresses or skirts for a feminine look. Add one or two accessories like a necklace, belt, or floral crown to enhance visual interest without overwhelming the overall look.

Flattering Your Features

Select outfits that complement your natural features. Choose flattering silhouettes and colors to ensure you love the way you look in your photos. Opt for three-quarter length sleeves to create a slimming effect on arms, or layer with jackets or cardigans for shorter sleeves. Avoid skinny straps or strapless dresses, as they can make arms appear larger on camera. For outdoor shoots, bring a warm coat to stay comfortable between shots.

Dressing for a photoshoot is an opportunity to showcase your style while capturing precious memories. Follow these tips to look and feel your best during your Mother’s Day session. With expert advice, you can create cohesive and stunning photographs that celebrate your family’s bond for years to come.
