Wardrobe Tips for Capturing Fall's Natural Beauty

This summer I photographed two beautiful family sessions at South Mesa in Boulder. The trails, fields, and mountain views made the perfect backdrop, and I loved capturing each family’s connection in such a stunning setting. While these particular sessions were taken in the warmer months, fall is right around the corner—and it’s one of the best seasons for family photos. The vibrant colors and cozy feel bring a special touch that you just can’t get any other time of year. For photographers preparing for the season, these tips for capturing fall will help you make the most of autumn’s stunning foliage and guide your clients on the perfect wardrobe choices.

Wardrobe Tips for Capturing Fall’s Natural Beauty

When it comes to outfits, suggest muted and earthy tones instead of bold, primary colors. These colors photograph beautifully and allow the fall leaves to shine without overpowering your clients. Great neutrals include taupe, cream, gray, and champagne. If clients want more color, encourage jewel tones like burgundy over red, mustard over yellow, or emerald over green. These shades add richness while still keeping the photos timeless. I also recommend layers—cozy sweaters, textured jackets, or scarves not only keep clients comfortable but also add visual depth to the images.

Maximizing Fall’s Golden Hour and Location Scouting

Lighting is another key factor in fall. The sun sets earlier than in summer, and golden hour happens quickly, so plan your sessions accordingly. Arrive early to scout the best spots and make the most of that golden glow. Locations like South Mesa are wonderful because you can capture a variety of looks—open fields, trails, and mountain views—without moving far. With the right wardrobe choices and attention to light, fall photos will feel magical and memorable for your clients.
