One remarkable aspect of the photography industry is the abundance of options available to choose from. This can lead to two outcomes: 1) an array of choices that provide endless possibilities or 2) a sense of overwhelming confusion. You might find yourself pondering, “What should I look for when choosing a photographer?” It’s crucial to narrow down your personal preferences before determining the factors and qualities you desire in a photographer for you and your family.

Certain factors, such as location and budget, will naturally limit your options. Once you have determined the photoshoot location (whether it be traveling out-of-state or staying local) and established your spending limit, you can begin exploring other factors that best meet your photography needs.

Style

Style is the first consideration. Every professional photographer has their own editing style, ranging from light and airy (my personal style) to dark and moody. To determine which style appeals to you, you can conduct a simple Pinterest search on various photography styles and use that as a starting point to find a photographer who matches your preferred style. Photographers typically have portfolios or websites where you can assess their creativity and the quality of their work.

Experience

Experience is another aspect to take into account. How do you assess a photographer’s experience in the specific area you are interested in? The best way to do this is to scroll through their social media platforms and/or website to ensure that their images are cohesive. This means that each session should generally have the same look and feel. This shows that your photographer can provide the same type of quality no matter the season, lighting, or family that they shoot.

Other factors such as professionalism, communication skills, and client relationships are also important. References and testimonials from previous clients can often be found on the photographer’s website or through a simple Google search. These are excellent resources to gauge these qualities.

Poses

Consider the types of poses you prefer. Some photographers lean towards traditional poses, while others specialize in capturing candid moments. Others use both types of poses, but it’s helpful to inquire about the photographer’s approach beforehand to ensures their style aligns with your vision.

Investment

Take the time to understand the potential photographer’s pricing structure as well as what their packages include. Photography is a luxury service and the range of investment can vary widely. Generally speaking, a quality photographer will not be for those who are budget seeking. You must consider the value you’ll receive for the services offered, the expertise they will provide, and the overall outcome of the images you desire to help you determine what you are willing to invest and bring to life your vision.

Connection

Finally, establishing a personal connection is essential. You should feel comfortable and have a good rapport with the photographer, as they will be capturing special moments and working closely with you. A positive working relationship and a sense of ease are crucial elements to consider.

By taking these factors into account and conducting thorough research, you will be equipped to find a photographer who meets your expectations and can deliver the desired results. Feel free to refer to this blog when choosing a photographer. Happy hunting!
