Where to Share Your Prep Tips for Maximum Impact

I recently wrapped up a round of gorgeous mini sessions at South Mesa Trailhead in Boulder, Colorado. It was such a joy photographing multiple families against those iconic Flatiron views—golden grass, big skies, and happy chaos with toddlers running around. But as much as the location matters, the prep process really shapes the whole experience. My goal is to make clients feel relaxed and confident walking into their shoot. For fellow photographers, I suggest thinking about what to recommend—rather than require—clients bring. These gentle suggestions can make a big difference in how smooth and joyful the session feels, without adding stress. A few thoughtful tips can help clients feel more prepared and at ease, which ultimately shows in the photos.

Ways I Prepped Clients Before They Arrived at South Mesa Trailhead

Instead of handing over a long list, I simply say: “Here are a few things that might come in handy—totally optional, but they’ve saved the day before!” That might include non-messy snacks for littles (crackers, not chocolate), a favorite lovey for comfort, baby wipes, or a low-key bribe like fruit snacks for after. I also recommend a neutral backup outfit—especially for toddlers who love a good dirt pile. Framing it as “just in case” helps parents feel prepared, not pressured. And when parents feel calm, the whole session flows better.

Where to Share Your Prep Tips for Maximum Impact

If you’re a new photographer, don’t wait until the shoot to share these tips. Drop them into your welcome guide, a pre-session email, or a reminder message the week of. Keep it short and mom-friendly—just a few bullet points will do. This approach shows you’ve thought through the details for them, without adding one more thing to their to-do list. In the end, your goal is to help them walk into that session feeling relaxed, not responsible for perfection. That’s when the magic happens.
