outdoor family session with Catherine Chamberlain Photography based in Longmont, Colorado serving northern CO

This family session with the Schnatwinkel family at Buckingham Park in Boulder was a perfect reminder of why I love what I do. The goal was to capture genuine moments of them just being themselves — kids chasing butterflies, grandma sharing laughs, and everyone relaxed in the beautiful Colorado outdoors. For photographers, creating authentic family memories starts with creating a vibe where everyone feels at ease. I guided the session softly, giving gentle prompts instead of strict poses. This helps families drop their guard and just enjoy the moment. When people are comfortable, the photos reflect their true personality, not just a staged smile.

Letting Moments Unfold: Creating Authentic Family Memories Through Candid Connection

Going with the flow is key to capturing genuine expressions. Kids are unpredictable — they might want to run, jump, or giggle at anything. I stay flexible and look for those candid moments. If a little one decides they only want to smile upside down, I roll with it. Sometimes the best shots happen when you’re open to whatever unfolds naturally. That relaxed approach creates a fun environment where families forget about the camera and focus on each other. As a photographer, it’s about noticing those fleeting expressions and movements that tell the real story.

How to Guide Families to Genuine Connection and Fun

Loose posing with purpose is a technique I swear by. I place people where the light and background work best, then encourage them to interact. Instead of stiff poses, I ask families to talk, joke, or play — whatever keeps them connected. This makes the photos lively and authentic. The trick is to keep the vibe fun and relaxed, so everyone feels like themselves. By blending gentle guidance with an easygoing attitude, I help families create images that are meaningful and true to who they are. That’s what makes family photography so special.
