Colorado’s natural beauty is nothing short of spectacular, with its majestic mountains and diverse landscapes. Yet, when autumn arrives and the trees burst into golden flames of color, it’s a photographer’s dream come true! The results are truly stunning, and I find immense joy in capturing tender family moments during this glorious fall season. During these recent South Mesa Trailhead minis, I enjoyed seeing everyone soak up the pleasant weather and simply enjoy their time out in nature. In this blog, we are going to explore some simple, yet effective steps I’ve found for gaining the cooperation of children during a family photoshoot.

For starters, do everything you can to prepare your children ahead of time. Explain to them before the session what you will be doing. Tell them how the photographer is going to be taking pictures, and even consider sharing what you are going to do with the pictures.
The next step is important. Once you arrive, resign yourself to being relaxed. When it’s time for your session, let me, as the photographer, take the lead. I have experience working with hundreds of children and have a few tricks up my sleeve. If you are stressed out and anxious, children sense that and play off your energy. If you give me a chance to see what I can do with the children before you step in, 9.9999 times out of 10 I will find the thing that the children are interested in and get beautiful photos.

And don’t worry if things don’t go as expected. There will be times when children are just struggling. This season of life with little ones can be unpredictable. But don’t worry, I have a backup plan for that as well, and your photos will still turn out beautiful. I focus on capturing the tender moments you share with your children. Particularly the snuggles, or the moments when you are comforting them by reassuring them “I’m here for you”. When you are in the midst of going through it, it may genuinely seem tough, but I know that when they are teenagers you will look back on those images and love them because you will see how you were there for your child—no matter what.
