Wind is a challenging element to deal with as an outdoor photographer. Rain—well, that one you just have to reschedule or wait it out in Colorado. Windy conditions, however, can be both a blessing and a curse. You must determine if it will work in your favor or against you. On one hand, the wind can add drama and movement to your photos creating dynamic, interesting compositions. On the other hand, it can also make it incredibly challenging to keep your camera steady, protect your gear from dust and debris and make sure the client still looks stellar. In this blog I’m going to share with you how I dealt with this in a practical yet professional way at these Boulder outdoor mini sessions.

Fall Mini Sessions in Boulder, CO

With the flatirons in Boulder as the background, we arrived at the perfect setting for family photos. That was, until we stepped out of the car. Immediately I was faced with a decision. Should I reschedule everyone, or could we still get epic outdoor photos with the knowledge I have and the right amount of patience? With my skills as a photographer, I knew I could not only make this session work, but also get clients the particular shots they desired.

Boulder Outdoor Mini Sessions in Northern Colorado

Being the second windiest day I have EVER shot, I was still able to capture all but one family (they decided to reschedule). The other families all agreed to attempt photos knowing that if we couldn’t get any shots that we would reschedule as well. When doing mini sessions, a photographer MUST have a plan to capture the needed images in such a short amount of time. Then add nearly gale-force winds, and you only have a couple of minutes total for each session as you wait for the gust to die down and grab the shot before the next massive blow comes through. Even though we did more waiting than shooting, I was still able to deliver full galleries and it’s only because I have a system that I follow and poses flow into each to make transitions smooth!

A big thank you to my clients who trust me to capture great images regardless of the weather. And if the weather wins, as it sometimes does, just know that I am always willing to reschedule. Please enjoy the photos below.
